A seasoned and well-respected expert in the construction and engineering industry, Ari Kamo parlayed his years of trade experience into the creation of his own company in 2008.

Since inception, the business provided MEP Engineering Designs and NYC Department of Buildings (DOB)-mandated inspection services for thousands of projects and has become one of New York City’s leading engineering consulting firms.

Ari is a professional engineer with a background in architectural engineering. His career has embraced all aspects of construction practices, which made opening his own firm an easy feat. Ari has extensive knowledge in the building industry, from project management, construction cost-estimating, engineering design, special inspections and DOB systems-filing and sign-off procedures.

The Pennsylvania State University graduate takes great pride in his company’s reputation of uncompromising integrity and reliability, ensuring that every regulated component of an installation satisfies DOB and other New York City regulations, while helping to keep demanding construction schedules on track.

ADAM SIDER

Director of Operations

Adam manages operations at AK Engineering by coordinating the various departments in the organization.

He oversees the day to day activities, manages the inspection schedules, ensures the preparation of all proposals, directs design activities deadlines and tracks each project from start to finish. In addition, he analyzes and monitors the internal processes of the company and implements procedural changes as necessary to improve operational efficiency.

Adam’s past experience as a Director of Operations in the Lighting & Energy Efficiency Industry has played a huge role in the success of AK Engineering’s operations.

Adam earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing Management at Touro College in Queens, NY.

DONNA BARDEN, PE

Director of Structural Inspections

Donna Barden is a professional engineer with a background in civil engineering, special inspections, site design, geotechnical and environmental engineering, and structural engineering systems.

As Director of Structural Inspections, she oversees field inspectors and consults on technical matters related to structural inspection requirements and code interpretation.

Donna often can be found on construction sites to review work in progress. On site, Donna inspects materials and installation methods. She is very hands on and ensures Building-Code Compliance by working with the efforts of the field and design teams. She also has the keen ability to keep the interests of contractors, vendors, and consultants in mind while monitoring issues of non-compliance. Donna’s goals are always to keep the project schedules on pace.

RAY luk

Senior Field Inspector and Technical Director

Ray is a mechanical engineer with experience in heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), energy systems and management, plumbing and sprinkler-systems, and more.

As an AK Engineering Technical Director he oversees construction projects by supervising AK inspectors, consulting on technical matters, reviewing installations, recording progress and ensuring that work and materials satisfy Building Code requirements.

Ray began learning about HVAC systems and energy management while attending the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). He graduated NYIT in 2011 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. The following year he also earned a Master’s Degree in Energy Management.

While performing his technical undergraduate studies, Ray participated in numerous interdisciplinary activities, including the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon and the USS Intrepid Pavilion-design competition. These high-profile projects helped propel Ray to develop a keen interest in the building-systems industry.

Ray maintains many notable certifications:

  • ICC Certified Masonry Inspector

BRIELLE HOTH

Senior Field Inspector

Brielle Hoth is a mechanical engineer with first-hand experience in inspecting architectural and MEP systems.

As a Senior Field Inspector, she supervises other AK team members and maintains responsibility for inspector training and ensuring compliance with New York City Building Code regulations.

Brielle is also an expert at guiding clients to correct issues of non-compliance. She is skilled in inspections as well as working with contractors, vendors, and consultants to ensure that demanding project schedules remain on track.

Brielle has a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering where she graduated cum laude from Fairfield University.

Brielle maintains many notable certifications:

  • ICC Certified Commercial Mechanical Inspector (CMI)

  • ACI Adhesive Anchor Installation Inspector

  • Brielle has also completed OSHA 10 hour and 30 hour-Construction Safety and Health. Plus, NYC DOB 4 hour-Supported Scaffold and 16 hour-Suspended Scaffold Training.

IHSANCAN (JOHN) TURAN

MEP Design Project Lead

John Turan is a mechanical engineer with primary experience in designing HVAC, sprinkler, plumbing, electrical, fire alarm systems and more. He meets with architects and owners to make sure the client requirements are met while all the code requirements are satisfied.

John oversees other AK Engineering designers to evaluate existing conditions, prepare assessment reports and required calculations as well as provide complete engineering design drawings according to the New York City Building Code. He also reviews RFIs, posts engineering design changes, and as-built information on drawings.

His expertise ranges from new and existing types of office, multifamily, sales, commercial, education, laboratories, and hospitals buildings. He is also very involved with Local Law 84/87, energy auditing, energy modeling, LEED, NYSERDA, P4P, commissioning, and energy management projects.  

John attended Rutgers University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He is a candidate for Professional Engineering (PE) Licensure and is certified as an Engineer in Training (EIT) by the NCEES.

John maintains many notable certifications:

  • Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) Certified Energy Manager (CEM)

  • ICC Commercial Mechanical Inspector (CMI)

MARY SHIPLEY

MEP Design Project Lead and Special Inspector

Mary graduated from Gonzaga University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. 

Combining her field experience as a Special Inspector with her education, Mary provides designs that are code compliant and work for each space. 

As a Design Project Lead, Mary reviews the designs of her colleagues and coordinates all trades and aspects of a project. 

Mary works with clients, architects, and contractors to provide her design expertise from project inception to build out. She understands the design requirements, finds creative solutions, and navigates any changes that arise. 

Mary will be a 2020 candidate for the Professional Engineer (PE) License and is certified as an Engineer in Training (EIT) by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). 

Mary maintains many notable certifications:

  • ICC Commercial Mechanical Inspector (CMI)

  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade 1 

  • Mary models safe worksite practices per OSHA 10 hour-Construction Safety and Health. Plus, she has NYC DOB 4 hour-Supported Scaffold training.

ALEX EDWARDS

MEP Design Project Lead and Special Inspector

Alex Edwards is a mechanical engineer with first-hand experience in inspecting architectural and MEP systems. He is skilled in working with contractors, vendors, consultants and clients to ensure that deficiencies are corrected and demanding project schedules are met.

He also has experience in designing HVAC, sprinkler, plumbing, electrical, fire alarm systems. He collaborates with architects and owners to ensure client satisfaction while maintaining NYC Building code requirements. His expertise ranges from new and existing types of offices, multi-family dwellings, restaurants and retail and commercial spaces.

Alex graduated from Stony Brook University cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. The following year he also earned a Master’s Degree in the same field.

Alex will be a 2020 candidate for the Professional Engineer (PE) License and is certified as an Engineer in Training (EIT) by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

Alex maintains many notable certifications:

  • ICC Commercial Mechanical Inspector (CMI)

MEP Engineering Consulting and Special Inspections are vital components of New York City’s construction industry, with AK Engineering playing a leading role in some of the city’s most dynamic projects.

We are seeking to build our AK Engineering Special/Progress Inspection Team with skilled personnel who possess, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in engineering and two to five years of experience in engineering, construction and/or inspections. Experience in engineering for building-construction projects is required, preferably in New York City.

Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and/or Professional Engineer (PE) designations are preferred, but not mandatory.
